Just got horrible news. I sit here with tears flowing like rivers down my face. My dear, sweet friend Mia has been battling cancer since April of this year. She had a spot on her tongue that wouldn't heal. Her dentist mentioned that she should go get it looked at just to make sure everything was okay. After she had a biopsy done and spoke to the doctor she was sure that everything was going to be okay, after all, she wasn't really a candidate for oral cancer...she didn't smoke, didn't chew tobacco, didn't have any of the genetic markers, but when she got the results she was in for a shock. She had cancer! Mia, was a beacon of strength through her surgery and recovery. She had about 1/3 of her tongue removed, all the lymph nodes in the right side of her neck removed and went through a course of radiation. Through it all she remained positive and drank her yucky Boost through a straw without complaint. That liquid food caused her all kinds of problems and...

On the first anniversary of my rebirth...

Today is a time for me to reflect. On this day, one year ago, I was rushed to the hospital barely conscious, and very, very sick. To read about what happened, click here. It's a long read so I suggest you find a comfy spot, grab a cuppa tea or hot chocolate, and wrap yourself up in a blankie. I've thought a lot about what this past year has meant to me and I feel an overwhelming inability to put it into words. The only way I can really peg it is to say that it was a time of rebirth for me. After just coming off Easter weekend where we celebrate Christ's victory over the grave I hope you won't see this post as trying to draw any parallels between Jesus and myself because, clearly, there can not be any. What I do feel though is that this past year has been one of renewal, reinvention and rebirth. How apropos that my illness and recovery occurred in the spring: the quintessential 'rebirth.' The earth stood still today. No, it wasn't because the planets were aligned. No, it wasn't because yesterday's date was 10/10/10 (which happens only once every 1000 years) No, it wasn't because the month of October has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, in it which, according to Facebook (and we know how reliable that is),only happens once every 823 years. No, it was more phenomenal then all of that. It was because I ironed. Sheets. Yes, I actually ironed sheets. Now, you need to understand that I only pick up my iron to move it from one location to another. Typically if something needs ironing one of three things happens: 1. it stays wrinkled 2. it hangs in my closet until gravity pulls the wrinkles out over time 3. I go and buy a new item of clothing. I just don't iron! So why did I do it today, you may ask? It was my front load washer and dryer's fault. It made Kiki's new bedding so wrinkly that I just could not stand to let ...
